Griffin Survivor All-Terrain Case for Apple iPhone 6 Plus Review

And finally, we get to Griffin’s most durable and rigorously tested case that’s meant to protect the iPhone 6 Plus from head-to-toe! After checking out several rugged style cases from its lineup, we’re ending things with the Griffin Survivor All-Terrain Case. If you’re more demanding when it comes to the protective elements of a case, you might be surprised what this one has to offer, since it’s constructed to safeguard the phone from all sorts of destruction.

What a beast! This case isn’t afraid to show off its girth and hefty size, seeing that the Survivor All-Terrain case has been made to meet or exceed MIL-STD 810G for extreme conditions. With its gargantuan size, it’s able to protect the iPhone 6 Plus from drops, dust, sand, rain, impacts, vibrations, and a handful of various environmental factors. So, how is this all achieved you ask? Interestingly enough, it’s achieved thanks to its 4 layers of protection.

Naturally, its beefy size is due to the assortment of layers it’s sporting. First and foremost, there’s the foam-lined shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame that’s covered by its outer rugged, shock-absorbing material. Drops won’t cause any sort of damage to the phone, mainly because the thick silicone outer shell allows it to just bounce to a stop when it’s dropped. In further strengthening its package, the Griffin Survivor All-Terrain features a built-in screen protector that not only protects the screen, but there’s a thin film over the Touch ID button to allow its continued use.

Sure, the design is more tank-like than anything else, but it’s available in four different colors. It’s certainly not afraid to make itself known either because of its goliath size, so it doesn’t come off too stylish or attractive. Needless to say, style isn’t high on the totem pole with this case, as it’s all about protecting the iPhone 6 Plus. Priced at $59.99, it’s clearly within Otterbox territory, but it’s actually less than the Defender Series case. For the price, some folks might overlook its immense size, since they gain a sturdy protective quality with the case.

Griffin Survivor Slim Case for Apple iPhone 6 Plus Review

Looking for an Otterbox alternative for your iPhone 6 Plus, but without the added bulk that accompanies Otterbox’s cases? Well, you should look for further than the Griffin Survivor Slim Case, which seems to deliver the drop protection that owners crave in the event they drop the premium-made smartphone. However, unlike Otterbox’s line of rugged cases, this one manages to minimize the amount of heft added to the iPhone 6 Plus.

Employing a dual-layer design, one that consists of an inner rigid polycarbonate shell and an outer silicone jacket, the combination is designed and tested to meet MIL-STD 801G for drop protection. Thankfully, we can attest that its drop protection is solid, as the silicone material absorbs shocks – thus, allowing it to simply bounce a little in the event it’s dropped. There’s a fair amount of lip around the display made by the case, but there’s no worrying about it scratching because the packaging comes included with a screen protector. As for the camera lens around the rear of the iPhone 6 Plus, which sticks out, it becomes recessed due to the case due to the lip created by the case.

On one hand, it’s not quite as bulky in size as some other comparable cases, but the silicone jacket that covers the entire thing just doesn’t cut it in the style department. Indeed, it safely protects the iPhone 6 Plus from some cringe worthy accidental drops, but we wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s the most attractive looking case. Quite frankly, even though it doesn’t really look too generic, or similar to the rugged styling we see from Otterbox’s portfolio, it would’ve been nice to see some sort of edgier appearance with the Griffin Survivor Slim Case.

Interestingly enough, the Griffin Survivor Slim Case for the iPhone 6 Plus comes close to the pricing we see from Otterbox. Its $44.99 pricing online isn’t cheap, but we imagine that it’s something that’s well within the scope of a ruggedized case. Honestly, though, it’s a toss-up on whether you should invest in this or an Otterbox – just because it’s not the most flattering looking thing. Then again, neither are the high-end Otterbox cases.

Otterbox Resurgence Power Case for Apple iPhone 6 Review

Otterbox’s newest case line is none other than the Resurgence series, first made for the iPhone 5/5s, which was something we came across last year that not only offers the same tough construction as its other cases, but it also offers iPhone users the convenience of juicing their devices on the go. More recently, the same Resurgence Series Case was announced for the iPhone 6, so we thought it’d be a good idea to see how this second go-around handles.

For the most part, the design language of the Otterbox Resurgence case for the iPhone 6 follows in the same manner as the one for the iPhone 5/5s. Durability is in full showing with this one, as it’s comprised from the same tough and rugged plastic material we see in Otterbox’s other cases. Therefore, it doesn’t surprise us at all that the case delivers outstanding protection against drops and scratches. Minor falls don’t worry us, but considering that there’s some substance behind its weight, it may prove to be too much for drops for lengthier heights.

Protection is obviously something that Otterbox loves to deliver with its cases, and it shows in this particular one as well, but it’s kind of tough getting the iPhone 6 out once it’s set in place. The two-piece construction of the Resurgence case ensures a tight fit, but prying off the front cover is a nightmare on its own – requiring some pressure on our part to remove cleanly. Another design concern of ours is how the case makes the headphone jack of the phone recessed, which is accessed by using the included adapter.

On the positive side, we do love how the case features a microUSB port on its side, which is primarily used to charge the case’s own internal 2600 mAh battery, but it also simultaneously charges the iPhone 6 as well. Around the back, there’s a button that initiates the charging process when it’s long pressed – while a quick tap lights up the corresponding LEDs to indicate its charge status. In our time using it, we’re able to get almost double the charge with our iPhone 6. By the second recharge, we’re only able to juice the iPhone 6 back to the 75% capacity mark.

Slapped with a price tag of $99.95, where it’s available in 4 different color jobs online, the Otterbox Resurgence Power Case manages to deliver the outstanding protection we expect from Otterbox – while also providing us the convenience of charging an iPhone 6 on-the-go. Sure, it’s a price that some might find a little premium, but it's something warranted. Of course, there are options that are priced less – though, they don’t quite offer the same level of sturdiness and drop protection we find in Otterbox’s line of cases.

Zagg Universal Keyboard Review

Zagg isn’t a stranger when it comes to making keyboards for various mobile devices. Although, taking a clear look at its selection online, the good majority of them are for the iPad. There are some models made for specific Android tablets, but the Zagg Universal keyboard aims to please an even broader range, as this Bluetooth enabled keyboard is made to work with all sorts of devices – so that includes Android, iOS, and Windows gadgets.

Generally speaking, Zagg’s line of keyboards tend to feature folio styled designs, but seeing that this one is made to work with all sorts of devices, it’s just a simple and portable one that has its own protective cover. First and foremost, we have to mention out how exquisitely lightweight it is – almost to the point of making us question if there’s anything inside of it. It’s so evident to the point that it makes us feel that it’s somewhat hollow. Well, that’s obviously due to the plastic material it’s sporting, which despite giving it that feather-like feel, it doesn’t necessarily give it any substance. Essentially, it feels cheap.

Sliding off the front cover, which also has a pop-out stand to accommodate all sorts of devices, we’re greeted to the island-style buttons of the keyboard. They’re raised and have enough spacing in between to minimize accidental presses – and there are dedicated buttons to launch certain services. For example, we have buttons for copy, paste, and various media controls along the top row of buttons. In addition, it’s great that there are navigational keys as well to make the process of placing the cursor a breeze.

In our experience, it didn’t take us long to get a feel of its layout and response – so we’re able to quickly jot out passages of text with few mistakes. Talk about longevity! Zagg claims that the Universal Keyboard can provide up to three month of battery life in between charges. For $69.99, however, we find the price to be just a smidgen more than we’d like. Sure, the portability and universal support is great, but it honestly doesn’t feel too solid with its construction to warrant its price.

Spigen Aluminum Fit Case for Apple iPhone 6 Review

Spigen offers an expansive set of cases for the iPhone 6, there’s no arguing about that reality as a quick look on its site reveals the obvious. Out of them all, the company’s most entry-level series cases for the iPhone 6 are the ones from its Thin series. Normally, they’re minimalist cases that are meant to primarily protect against scratches, but they lack any style. Interestingly enough, however, its new Aluminum Fit Case aims to change all that.

Checking out the Spigen Aluminum Fit case for the iPhone 6, it clearly follows the same minimalist design language that the series is known for. It’s both form-fitting and svelte, offering very little added size to the iPhone 6’s incredibly skinny frame. The majority of the case is constructed from polycarbonate, but the rear features a slick looking brushed anodized aluminum plating – giving this otherwise bland case some style.

Beyond that, the Spigen Aluminum Fit case is similar to its other line of Fit cases. Cutouts offer us easy access to the handset’s various ports and buttons – including the headphone jack thanks to the wide cutout for it. Yet again, it’s the kind of thing that protects against scratches, as well as normal wear and tear, but it’s not meant to really safeguard it from drops. Sure, minor bumps won’t do too much to the case, but don’t expect good results with serious drops.

Over on Spigen’s website, the Aluminum Fit case sells for $29.99, which is a significant increase over the $14.99 cost of its usual Thin Fit cases. That’s mighty costly considering that the only major difference here is the brushed aluminum plating around the back, which of course gives it a subtle premium quality, but we don’t feel that it’s enough to warrant the excessively higher price point. Then again, it can be fetched for as low as $15.22 through Amazon – a price point we don’t feel to be bad at all.
